Graduation Staging by Stage Systems

The company helped ensure a smooth-running graduation at Loughborough University

Loughborough University holds its summer graduation ceremonies in the Sir David Wallace Building. A number of ceremonies take place during a week of graduation and approximately 3,000 students graduate each year from the University’s three faculties. Stage Systems’ Multi-dek provides a versatile and aesthetically pleasing staging solution for the event.

 The creative solution

For the ceremonies, the Sir David Wallace Building needs to be transformed from a sports hall venue, accommodating sports such as basketball and badminton into a graduation space. To set up for the event, rows of seating are laid out for graduating students and their families, facing the focal point – a large, carpeted stage 12m wide, with access steps and handrails, together with a ramp offering wheelchair access with a gradual incline at either end. The stage is decorated with floral displays and lecterns are set out at each end.  Chairs are positioned to accommodate the University Academics, including the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, the Dean and Heads of Department.  The venue proves to be a fabulous setting for these grand and memorable ceremonies.  The advantage of ‘Stage Systems’ modular solution is that after the graduations, the staging and ramp can be dismantled and stored away on storage trolleys and stored away.

The outcome 

The stage is built from Multi-dek, a strong and versatile staging system, modular, consisting of frames and decks, fixed together using no tools. An ideal solution which can be dismantled and stacked on wheeled storage trolleys, ready for the next event. With accessories such as steps, wheelchair ramps, safety rails, handrails, skirting and carpet, this stage is the perfect example of how  Multi-dek can be utilised to temporarily and easily add a strong and beautiful staging platform for any purpose.

The university’s feedback 

With the need for a raised platform, with strength and aesthetics, Multi-dek staging has proved that it has the necessary qualities of its own to meet these requirements.

“The modular design allows for different sizes and formations of staging to be created, compact storage is intrinsic to the design and a variety of accessories means the staging can adapt for different uses.”

The Loughborough Graduation ceremonies could offer wheelchair access, stepped access, and a large, carpeted stage area, helping to transform the hall into an amazing graduation event space.
