New Chief Executive for CUBO

The College and University Business Officers (CUBO) has appointed Jan Capper as its first Chief Executive

Posted by Rebecca Paddick | June 12, 2017 | People

The appointment is one of a number of significant recent developments, including the association becoming a limited company following a strategic review in 2016.

Jan takes up her post with CUBO this week. Prior to joining CUBO, Jan was Executive Director of the International Association of Language Centres (IALC), an association of independent and mostly owner-operated language schools in over 20 countries worldwide.

IALC’s activities on behalf of its members include quality auditing, an annual AGM and trade event for 300-400 people in the city of an IALC member; trade missions and opportunities, learning, exchange of best practice, and annual industry research reports. Over two decades, working with successive executive boards, Jan oversaw the development of IALC from its dynamic, volunteer-led origins into an award-winning and highly respected association in language study abroad.

Jan graduated with a degree in Modern Languages with Economics from the University of Bradford. Since then she has pursued a successful career in tourism and international education, working in both the commercial and non-profit sectors. She has over 20 years experience working with issues around quality and regulation, access to market and business needs of language schools.

I look forward to leading the association and to meeting and learning from the members over the coming months, so that we can develop and improve our services, raise our industry profile and champion the contribution of members to higher education

In addition to her experience of leading an association, Jan has herself served as a volunteer. She chaired the IALC marketing committee while working for one of the association’s founding members, and also served as co-convenor of GAELA, the Global Alliance of Education and Language Associations.

Jan said: "I'm impressed with everything I've seen of CUBO so far - the people, the work, the enthusiasm, the potential. I look forward to leading the association and to meeting and learning from the members over the coming months, so that we can develop and improve our services, raise our industry profile and champion the contribution of members to higher education."

Emma Furnival, Chair of CUBO said “Following a very rigorous selection process, the CUBO Board of Directors are delighted that Jan will lead CUBO into the next phase of our strategic plan. Jan has a thorough understanding of the education sector and awareness of the needs of our members, corporate partners and key strategic partners. The Board is very much looking forward to working with Jan and we will be introducing her to our members at the annual summer conference, which is only 3 weeks away.”

The CUBO summer conference is taking place at the University of Kent from 27-29 June 2017. With over 100 delegates, more than 60 suppliers, overseas partners and other stakeholders attending the conference, it provides the perfect opportunity for delegates to meet Jan over the course of the three-day event.
