Wireless technology is nothing new and used in lots of everyday situations; however, it has had quite low adoption rates when it comes to things like access control, which is surprising as it offers plenty of benefits in this area, especially around cost effectiveness, performance and reliability.
In terms of how cost effective a wireless system can be, well the clue is in the name! There is no need for any hard wiring or cabling as part of the installation, which is good news. Running physical cabling can be an awkward job, especially given a lot of access control installations are either right at the end of a build cycle or are retro fit. Nobody wants to start disturbing walls or floor coverings or to damage the aesthetics of a building. This lack of wiring is particularly useful for listed buildings or where a building has a lot of glass. Also, when a wired system is installed it is often very disruptive to the buildings occupants, so much so, that some installations need to be done outside of core business hours, which will have a significant impact on the cost of the installation. So overall going wireless can offer some real cost benefits.
From a performance perspective, a wireless system, once installed, delivers immediate connectivity and is easily scaled (it is quick and easy to add new doors with little additional installation cost). Operationally the data and permissions are stored at the server and are transmitted to the wireless door readers via distributed intelligence, most commonly, your staff or students’ ID card. Most wireless systems are highly secure and should meet RF IEEE 802.15.4 at 2.4 GHz standard and be AES 128Bit encrypted.
In real time, building managers will be able to cancel keys, monitor who went through doors or tried to access a door they shouldn’t. To ensure reliability, building managers can view real time battery statues for each door and take preventative action in good time should a door show a low battery status. Additionally, if a reader is offline at any time, it still functions via the locks battery and once back online any data is immediately pushed back to the server.
