The University of London’s Garden Halls has been shortlisted in the Best Student Housing category at the College and University Business Officers (CUBO) Awards. Launched in 2012, the CUBO Awards are a yearly event to recognise the achievements of those working within the higher education industry.

The flagship redevelopment of Garden Halls – which involved more than £140-million of investment – is one of the largest student developments in London and was redeveloped in partnership with University Partnerships Programme (UPP). The striking new building responds to a strong demand from students for high quality accommodation located close to their place of study in central London.

We are proud to have delivered this important project that sets a new bar for student accommodation in the heart of London and enhances the student experience - Sean O’Shea, Group Chief Executive Officer of UPP

Sean O’Shea, Group Chief Executive Officer of UPP said: “We are delighted Garden Halls has been shortlisted for the Best Student Housing Award, together with our partners at the University of London. It is recognition of the high standards and innovation at Garden Halls that enable students to achieve their best in a home from home environment, as well as underlining the strength of the partnership between UPP and the University of London. We are proud to have delivered this important project that sets a new bar for student accommodation in the heart of London and enhances the student experience.”

Chris Cobb, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer at University of London said: “We are proud that Garden Halls has been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Recognition indeed that the student experience has been at the heart of this collaborative project right from the start.”

The Garden Halls redevelopment is one of the largest student developments in London, providing accommodation for 1,200 University of London students in the heart of Bloomsbury. With a mix of room types, the accommodation promotes the development of strong communities and enhances the student experience through high quality residential and social spaces. The accommodation, supported with pastoral care provision, allows the students to live, study and relax in an inspirational, safe and secure environment. The redevelopment includes the comforts of shared kitchens, peer learning space, TV lounges, a games room, dining facilities and a cinema room.

The partnership with the University of London, established in 2013, involved UPP designing and financing the scheme, thereafter operating the scheme for 50 years. Funded by Pensions Insurance Corporation (PIC), with subordinated debt and equity provided by UPP and its shareholders, the transaction has enabled the University of London to make more effective use of their assets, freeing up resources to improve services available to students and to focus investment on teaching and research. The Garden Halls redevelopment will help the University of London to continue its current trajectory; to grow and develop as one of the most significant academic institutions in the country.
