Consider this from the point of view of a security manager on a busy campus. The alarm to a building is sounded in the middle of the night. The manager receives notification through their mobile app from which they can check live and/or recorded video footage from a camera located where the alarm has been triggered and/or motion detected. The security manager can then remotely verify whether this incident was a false alarm and if it is, they remotely reset the alarm and go back to sleep without having to visit the building.
For some larger campuses, their buildings may be monitored by manned security and/or remotely monitored in a video control room. The use of motion detection, line crossing detection, vibration detection (e.g. vibration sensors on a wire fence detecting attempts to climb or cut the fence) means you can sufficiently monitor a site with fewer people given you do not have to rely on a guard to spot an intruder, they merely have to react. An intruder can be more easily tracked once they have entered the building, through the use of motion detection, leading to quicker capture.
