Home is where the heart is

Why a clean, comfortable living environment can enhance student wellbeing

Posted by Rianna Newman | September 16, 2017 | Facilities

Tanya Rogers, Sales Director at Crystal Facilities Management, talks about how a well-maintained living space can help promote wellbeing amongst students, making them feel settled and at home in their university accommodation.

Entering into the whole new world known as ‘student life’ can be one of the most exciting experiences a young adult can face, especially when it involves moving away from home and experiencing independence for the first time. The first few weeks of term are literally jam packed with new opportunities, new friends and new challenges, and as a result, the time flies by in a whirl of new activities.

Once the crazy chaos of Freshers’ Week has passed and the initial buzz of ‘newness’ has calmed down, students begin to settle into their new life. Aside from balancing the increasing study demands of a new course with extra curriculum activities, many students also have to squeeze in some part-time work to help fund the numerous social opportunities that go hand in hand with student living.

For many students, this can be an emotionally unsettling time, when reality kicks in and with it the realisation that they are a long way from home. Suddenly the term seems endless, with the Christmas break appearing as a small twinkly light at the end of a very long tunnel. Unsurprisingly, this is a prime time for homesickness to start to creep in.

Whilst homesickness is often unavoidable, there are ways to help ease it – ensuring that student accommodation is as clean, comfortable and homely as possible is a good start. This is where Crystal Facilities Management can help. In addition to preparing student accommodation for the new academic year, we also offer ongoing cleaning services to ensure that student facilities are kept in tip-top condition throughout the year.

Aside from providing regular cleaning and maintenance services to common rooms and communal areas, CFM also offer the option for students to arrange additional cleaning services for their individual rooms. Our 10 years of experience working within universities have taught us that there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to cleaning and maintenance within student accommodation, which is why we offer bespoke cleaning services that can be arranged on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis, to suit individual students’ requirements.

There are many practical and emotional benefits to ongoing cleaning, including:

- Clean, tidy accommodation will enable students to instantly sit down to continue studies out of class.

- A relaxing environment will improve wellbeing, promote better sleep and ultimately help improve focus.

- It can be difficult to concentrate in a cluttered and chaotic environment, whereas an organised space can help keep studies in order and encourage clear thinking.

- Personal space that feels like a ‘home from home’ can be invaluable for taking time out from the hubbub of university life.

- Regular cleaning reduces the need to carry out intense maintenance at the end of the academic year.

- Ongoing cleaning takes away the stress of anticipating failed inspections or end of year maintenance charges.

Although university life is undoubtedly packed full of great experiences, it is often very different to the home life that students have left behind. As a result, a few wobbles are inevitable whilst adjusting to the newly found independence.

Creating a happy and secure base during this potentially unsettling time can make a huge difference to how well students get through this all-important first term, helping them minimise any feelings of homesickness and embrace student life to the fullest.
