Gloucester approves new student housing

ADP's plans include the planting of trees and wildflower meadows

Gloucester City Council has approved ADP’s plans for new student housing for the University of Gloucestershire.

Located on the Debenhams Playing Field, north of the Oxstalls Campus, the new development will provide 200 en-suite student bedrooms with shared communal kitchen and dining areas.

The design of the student housing and landscaping has been carefully considered to minimise the impact on the neighbouring dwellings and allotments of the local community.

A mixture of two and three storey blocks, arranged in three staggered buildings, reduces bulk and increases views through the site. Communal areas in each block face away from the nearby residential area, minimising any potential noise transfer. Construction materials have been chosen to complement the domestic character of the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

Trees will also be planted in open grassland to soften the site and provide screening. As the site is located within close proximity of Wooton Brook, wildflower meadows and wet swales are planned as part of the drainage and flood strategy. These will also provide a rich habitat for local wildlife, enhancing ecology and biodiversity.

Careful consideration has also been given to enhancing existing Public Rights of Way and cycle paths to create links between the new development and the Oxstalls Campus, which is a 15 minute walk from Gloucester City centre. Links to neighbouring allotments also aim to encourage students to grow their own produce.
