First students enroll at International Pathway College

The University of York's International Pathway College (IPC) has welcomed its first students on campus

Posted by Hannah Oakman | September 21, 2016 | Students

The IPC, run in conjunction with Kaplan International Colleges, will provide academic preparation programmes for over 300 international students this academic year, eventually rising to 450 in three years’ time.

A range of programmes will be offered, which will focus on integrating subject knowledge with relevant language and academic skills, preparing international students for a degree at York.

All academic programmes are approved by the University of York and taught by University staff.

Director of the IPC at the University, Dr Matthew Perry, said he was looking forward to welcoming the new students.

He said: “This is a very exciting time for the University of York and the International Pathway College.  It has taken years of hard work to get to this stage but I am delighted that our first students are set to arrive on campus this weekend.

“We have a brilliant team here at York who are looking forward to meeting the students and delivering a fantastic programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students.”

Students will be supported through a programme of welfare and extra curricula activities, specifically targeted to the needs of international students.

The students will be split between the Foundation Certificate preparing for undergraduate study and the pre-masters programme for progression to a postgraduate taught degree.

The IPC team includes subject leaders, Chris Copland (English Language and Academic Skills), Dr Ben Flowerdew (Science and Engineering) and Dr Charalambos Pattichis (Business, Law and Social Sciences).

Iain Brennan has moved from the Kaplan International College London to become College Services Director in York.  All have significant experience in working with international students in higher education.

In its first year, the IPC will use existing buildings on Campus West, including space in the new Spring Lane Teaching Building, before moving to a purpose built home on Campus East.
