Content (and connectivity) is king

The ASK4 network gives students in accommodation access to their most valued platforms with reliable connections

Posted by Rob Bertels | October 19, 2017 | Students

As a service provider delivering internet connectivity to hundreds of thousands of 18-24 year olds in student accommodation, ASK4 knows that today’s students are demanding consumers. Whether in university operated or private student accommodation, use of the Internet is deeply embedded in their lifestyles. In fact, when they’re not asleep, they’re online - consuming and creating hours of content using an average of 5 wireless devices each.[1]

Today’s students also watch 2.6 times more IPTV and Video on Demand (VoD) than non-millennials (an accelerating trend) and have more IPTV / VoD subscriptions, for services like Netflix (a clear leader), Amazon Prime and NOW TV, than any other group.[2]

Delivering on Content Preferences

For students accessing these services, the difference between a good viewing experience and a poor one is not simply the speed of the available internet connection but the reliability of that connection, and the speed at which the content can be accessed. That is why the ASK4 network has been built to reflect students’ content demands and preferences, with content caches for major content providers like Netflix and Google, and private network interconnections with providers like Facebook, Amazon and Twitch to ensure students can access the content that matters most to them quickly and consistently, over a reliable, robust connection.

Premium Viewing

Students viewing preferences are also shaped at home, with almost half of students connected to the ASK4 network having had access to some form of premium TV service (e.g. BT, Virgin, Sky) before leaving home for university.[3] However, we know that students are resistant to subscribing directly for content services, beyond those they already enjoy, when they arrive at their new accommodation. These services are typically cost prohibitive and involve 12 month minimum contracts - both factors that provide an opportunity for accommodation operators looking to enhance their inclusive offering, in-room and in communal spaces.

In the Summer of this year, ASK4 announced an exclusive partnership with BT Sport, offering student accommodation operators access to BT’s sports channels at highly competitive rates - significantly better value than other premium TV sports service providers. This service is included within students’ monthly rent, meaning they can access BT Sport alongside ASK4's superfast broadband service, at no additional cost.

The inclusion of BT Sport is a compelling offer for students, providing them with premium International sports content such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Europa League, Emirates FA Cup, Aviva Premiership Rugby, UFC, NBA Basketball, Major League Baseball, World Title Boxing and Moto GP. The variety and volume of international sports coverage is perfectly suited to the viewing preferences of international students, and popular top-tier football content coincides with typical peak time usage of student common room and gym areas. Speaking of the partnership ASK4 Founder and CEO, Jonathan Burrows, commented:

We’re delighted to partner with BT Sport to provide our users with access to live sports coverage. Whether residents congregate around TVs in social spaces, or watch on their own devices, providing BT Sport is a great way for accommodation operators to enhance a sense of community and create engagement with and between residents. It is also another way to help operators stand out from the crowd in an increasingly competitive student accommodation marketplace.
