Bournemouth to roll out JUMP programme to all 2K employees

Bournemouth was the fourth UK university to implement the JUMP engagement programme, which rewards employees for green and healthy behaviour

After a successful six-month pilot, Bournemouth University is set to roll out its sustainability and wellbeing engagement programme, known as JUMP, to all 2,000 of its employees.

The JUMP programme, operated by award-winning engagement company Green Rewards, works by rewarding employees with points and prizes for positive sustainable behaviour changes. Four departments at Bournemouth University were invited to take part in the JUMP pilot. As well as earning individual prizes, employees competed in teams for the top prize of a £100 donation to benefit a local charity project.

A third of its target audience signed up to the programme’s pilot, which produced extremely positive results for the University. In just six months, average energy consumption dropped 14.6% across active departments, 26,000 sustainable miles were travelled to and from campus and 11 tonnes of C02 emissions were avoided. Staff continued to remain engaged throughout the pilot.

JUMP engages employees in a range of sustainability and wellbeing themes through an online platform and app, including sustainable travel, energy saving, health and wellbeing. Employees are rewarded with points for taking steps to reduce their environmental footprint and improve their wellbeing, such as car-sharing, reporting their recycling, using reusable bottles and cups and reporting exercise they participated in.

Bournemouth University and Green Rewards recently held an awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the JUMP pilot and announce the winner. Bournemouth University Finance team was awarded the top prize this time around and chose to use their prize money to benefit Bournemouth Food Bank.

It’s been such an informative programme and I love that I can earn rewards for being more eco-friendly! - Sharon Byrne, Finance and Resources Team Leader, Bournemouth University

Sharon Byrne, Finance and Resources Team Leader at the university, said, “I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the JUMP pilot. It’s been such an informative programme and I love that I can earn rewards for being more eco-friendly!”

Graham Simmonds, managing director at Green Rewards said “We’re delighted with how well the JUMP pilot has gone. We’re really looking forward to the university-wide roll out and helping the university work towards achieving its environmental and wellbeing targets.”

In January 2017, Bournemouth University became the fourth university to implement the JUMP programme, joining Swansea University, the University of Chichester and Brunel University. The University of Winchester is the latest university to launch the sustainability and wellbeing programme in September this year.

The university-wide roll-out of JUMP at Bournemouth University reflects a wider commitment in the academic sector to reduce carbon emissions, save energy and incentivise employees to take part in wellbeing initiatives.
