Professor Mary Carswell, former Pro-Vice Chancellor at Birmingham City University, has received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to higher education

Mary received her OBE at Buckingham Palace in November from Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

Mary worked at Birmingham City University for nine years after joining in 2006 as Pro-Vice Chancellor, with her areas of work including focus on learning and teaching, widening participation and Further Education provision.

Her work resulted in the University being awarded a Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Support for Students.

The Duke of Cambridge was very welcoming and approachable and took time to talk to each recipient individually which all added to the enjoyment of the day. He also told me about his Birmingham connection, being an Aston Villa supporter

Mary is also Chairman of Loughborough Boat Club and Vice Chair of the Designate Board of Nottingham College, which will be formed early next year through a merger of New College Nottingham with Central College Nottingham.

On receiving her OBE, Mary who lives in Thrumpton, Nottinghamshire, said: “It was lovely to receive the OBE and be recognised for what I have achieved with the help of so many great colleagues over the years. The Duke of Cambridge was very welcoming and approachable and took time to talk to each recipient individually which all added to the enjoyment of the day.

"He also told me about his Birmingham connection, being an Aston Villa supporter. Having my OBE presented by the Duke of Cambridge in the rather elaborate surroundings of Buckingham Palace with my family watching on did make this a very special day.”
