Bangor leads the way in environmental management

The university gains prestigious new Green Dragon Standard for Environmental Management before any other British University

Other certified organisations have 12 months to satisfy the more stringent criteria of the revamped award if they wish to achieve it before it becomes compulsory, but confident in their environmental management procedures Bangor opted to be assessed immediately, and passed with flying colours.

Gareth Jones, Green Dragon Quality Manager at Groundwork Wales said: ‘To achieve Level 5 certification so soon after the Standard has been revised is commendable, and clearly demonstrates their ongoing commitment to reducing their environmental impacts and promoting sustainability within the University. We congratulate them on all of their hard work.’

Vice-Chancellor of Bangor University Professor John G Hughes is ‘delighted’ with the university’s achievement, stating: ‘achieving the award so early after it was introduced is a credit to the many staff and students who are actively involved in protecting and enhancing the environment in and around Bangor University’.

Energy use in the majority of our buildings is now monitored every half hour through our Automated Metering System

Some of that active involvement in protecting the environment comes through the university’s close work with Groundwork Wales, who carefully examine Bangor’s energy and water conservation measures, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste and travel management.

The university has also implemented a range of initiatives designed to reduce their carbon footprint, ranging from LED lighting and heating system upgrades to bin-less offices and electric vehicles. In addition to this the Vice- Chancellor explained: ‘energy use in the majority of our buildings is now monitored every half hour through our Automated Metering System, and this is becoming invaluable in helping us understand where even further efficiencies can be made’.
