Award-winning energy procurement from sector consortium

If you thought you knew The Energy Consortium (TEC), think again

Big changes in markets require similar big changes in services. That is why TEC has undergone a significant transformation over the past two years. The focus has been on changing the skillset of our staff and services provided to our members. This has changed the offering to a fully managed energy service from a largely procurement-based approach. This very much reflects what the changes in the energy market require as well as what our members told us they needed.

So if you think you knew TEC, then think again.

The new and highly experienced team supports members with an impressive 107 years’ combined energy experience, not to mention many years in procurement and public sectors.

A significant element of this transformation has been in the procurement of a groundbreaking energy supply framework for the sector. Our members now benefit from;

  • Significantly lower supply margins, down by 70% on previous frameworks, reflecting the attractiveness of higher education establishments to the energy supply market.
  • Further discounts to all basket members to reflect and reward growth in the portfolio.
  • Provision of annual benefits statements, highlighting spend and consumption, which supports the efficiency agenda for the sector and helping to answer the question “Why TEC?”
  • The ability for TEC to defend a budget whilst passing on the benefits and enabling accurate energy budgeting using web-based tools.

The higher education sector has a truly market-leading and award-winning consortium looking after their energy supply needs

With the first delivery against the frameworks from October 2016, the contracts awarded allow us to purchase over £600m of energy on behalf of our members. And the benefits of the new experience and skills within the TEC team paid immediate dividends, with 100% of members committed under the previous framework joining the new one, and then over 99% of the energy supply points transferred to the new suppliers as scheduled on the framework start date, an almost unprecedented result for a portfolio of over 5,500 supplies.

So perhaps these were factors which saw TEC confirmed Energy Buying Team of the Year at the prestigious Energy Awards during November 2016.

It was a huge achievement for us. Entered into the larger team category and beating off stiff competition from some notably larger and more commercial organisations it truly is recognition of our commitment to deliver a groundbreaking framework for flexible purchase of gas and power. We are sure that our unique approach to ensuring members were central to all aspects of the process and awarding of the winning frameworks went some way to support the decision by the judges to give this award to the TEC team.

So the higher education sector has a truly market-leading and award-winning consortium looking after their energy supply needs. Evidence that TEC has truly changed for the better and the benefit of the sector.
