Alumno Placemaking at Former Southwark Town Hall

Alumno Developments and contractor, HG Construction, have completed the visionary redevelopment of Former Southwark Town Hall

From the photos of the completed scheme before and after the works, it is clear how this approach to placemaking drives the process through which Alumno works. All the stakeholders in the building were consulted to help shape the public spaces. The Alumno approach is rooted in community-based participation, and involves planning, design, management and programming of shared use spaces. Alumno has successfully delivered student housing and mixed use developments throughout the UK for the last 10 years and have used this experience to fully realise the potential of the Former Town Hall Building.

The transformation of the Former Town Hall follows on from Alumno’s successful redevelopment of former council offices on Peckham Road in 2012. Alumno has again overcome the challenges of turning a derelict building in a conservation area into a modern, sophisticated and accessible dwelling for students and a place for the larger community to use and enjoy. The Former Town Hall has metamorphosed from a public building serving the community, to help them establish a sound, solid financial basis to expand into a vibrant new centre for learning and creativity.

The Southwark Town Hall development further establishes the area as a new creative hub

David Campbell, Managing Director of Alumno Developments, said: “It has been a busy period for us but the work our team has put in is fantastic, to see such an important development reach completion, providing good, functional and environmentally focused student accommodation.

“The Southwark Town Hall development further establishes Peckham Road as a new creative hub and helps bring new vibrancy to this area, while also maintaining its character and status as an arts venue for the wider area.”

The development includes a new home for students studying at the world famous Goldsmiths University of London, affordable artists studios managed by SPACE studios and a café/gallery open to the public on the ground floor. To the rear of the Former Town Hall is a state-of-the-art children’s theatre. The new Theatre Peckham will have a larger auditorium and two new large studios. Theatre Peckham has been operating from this site, before it was demolished and replaced for the past 30 years providing courses and opportunities to local youngsters.
